Let’s break down what this means, how it impacts fertility, and actionable tips to minimize exposure for a healthier fertility journey.

## What Is Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10)?

Particulate matter (PM) refers to tiny particles in the air that can penetrate deep into our bodies when inhaled. These particles often come from sources like vehicle emissions, industrial activity, wildfires, and even household pollutants.

PM2.5: These particles are 2.5 micrometers or smaller—tiny enough to enter your bloodstream through the lungs.

PM10: Slightly larger particles, 10 micrometers or smaller, which can still enter the respiratory tract.

## How Does Particulate Matter and Pollution Impact Fertility?

### Ovarian Reserve

Ovarian reserve—your egg quantity—can also be negatively affected by pollution. Research suggests that PM exposure may [accelerate ovarian aging](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-50753-6#:~:text=The%20study%20shows%20that%20exposure,AMH%20based%20on%20age26.), lowering the number of viable eggs available for conception to a point that falls outside the normal range based on age. PM2.5 has been linked to disruptions in hormonal signalling pathways critical for healthy ovarian function.

### Male & Female Factor Fertility 

Exposure to high levels of particulate matter has been associated with an increased risk of infertility in both men and women. ## Reduce Exposure to Particulate Matter and Pollution

 

While we can’t entirely avoid air pollution, there are ways to minimize exposure and protect your reproductive health:

### Invest in an Air Purifier

A high-quality HEPA air purifier can reduce indoor exposure to PM2.5 and other pollutants, especially in urban areas or during wildfire seasons.

### Monitor Air Quality 

Use apps or websites to check air quality in your area. On days with high pollution levels, stay indoors as much as possible, especially during peak traffic hours. Be mindful about your activities, reducing outside exercise on high pollution days and choosing lower pollution areas (ex. away from highways) for running/walking/hiking. 

### Close your Windows

On high pollution days or when sitting in traffic, closing your windows is a simple but effective way to reduce exposure. Benefit if you have a HEPA filter in your home and vehicle. 

### Keep your Home Clean & Green 

Reduce indoor pollutants by avoiding the use of aerosols, synthetic air fresheners, or harsh cleaning products. Limiting burning candles and incense inside, and keep your space well-ventilated. And ALWAYS remove your shoes on entering your home.
